The tragic death of defensive end Marshawn Kneeland has overshadowed the Dallas Cowboys’ bye week.

News broke on Thursday that the second-year pro, who scored his first career touchdown against the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday, had taken his own life following an apparent mental health episode.

Cowboys teammates and Green Bay Packers star Micah Parsons were among those who paid tribute to Kneeland as the football world tried to come to terms with what happened.

It is likely that the former Western Michigan star will be honored during Sunday’s NFL games, but Dallas is not slated to play.

Why are the Dallas Cowboys not playing this weekend?

The Cowboys were scheduled for a Week 10 bye when the NFL released the fixtures for 2025.

Not having to prepare will give the organization time to reflect on a difficult period and make plans for a return to the field on Monday Night Football in Week 11.

A picture of Kneeland and the team’s statement paying tribute to him has been displayed on the giant video screen outside the team’s HQ at The Star.

Fans turned up on Thursday to lay flowers, candles, and jerseys beneath the blue star that represents America’s Team.

According to The Dallas Morning News, messages and tributes from teammates and coaches have been placed on screens around the plaza.

Players and staff joined fans at the display after practice, with some visibly emotional.

Head coach Mike McCarthy and several players offered prayers and hugs to grieving fans.

The Cowboys told ESPN that the memorial will remain open over the weekend.

Grief counselors are being made available to players and staff.

When the Cowboys return to the field on primetime against the Las Vegas Raiders, it will likely be an emotional occasion with players, fans, and broadcasters reflecting on this week’s sad events.
