With concerns surrounding the future of the Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback room in 2026 and beyond, CBS Sports has linked the Steel City brand of football to one of the hottest stories taking over the NFL today — the seemingly inevitable split between the Arizona Cardinals and former first-round quarterback Kyler Murray.
Following ESPN’s Adam Schefter’s report that the Cardinals could look to part ways with Murray next offseason, CBS Sports’ Tyler Sullivan argued the Steelers were one of the best potential landing spots for the former Heisman Trophy winner.
“…While the Rodgers experiment has largely proven to be a success at this point, it’s not a long-term option for the organization,” Sullivan wrote. “Rodgers himself alluded to this season possibly being his last in the NFL, which would put the Steelers back into the quarterback market this offseason. If they make the playoffs like they are currently projected to do, they won’t have a first-round draft pick high enough in 2026 to put them in the range of a Day 1 starter. So, they’ll likely be dipping their toe back into the veteran market, and they could do a lot worse than Murray.”
Selected with the first overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, Murray earned Offensive Rookie of the Year recognition in his debut season, along with two Pro Bowl selections during his seven years in Arizona. Despite flashing greatness, the Cardinals have made the playoffs just once since Murray took quarterback duties — being blown out by the Los Angeles Rams in the 2021 Wild Card round of the playoffs.
The Cardinals’ shortcomings hardly fall on the shoulders of the quarterback, but sitting at an unimpressive 3-5 record with Murray currently on Injured Reserve until at least Week 14, it’s safe to say his time in Arizona may be coming to an end — the perfect opportunity for a bounce-back year in Pittsburgh.
