Week 10 wasn’t pretty for the Pittsburgh Steelers. They got crushed by the Los Angeles Chargers, losing 25-10. With the Baltimore Ravens winning their game, the Steelers’ spot atop the AFC North isn’t secure at all. While the Steelers are still in first place, the Ravens are only one game behind them. Baltimore is getting hot, while Pittsburgh continues stumbling. However, former NFL corner Aqib Talib still believes that the Steelers will win their division.
“I do,” Talib said Monday on The Arena podcast. “That’s y’all’s problem. Y’all see one game and y’all want to flip everything… You ain’t see none of the five wins? They’ve got five wins. Y’all acting like they don’t have five wins. They [were] 5-3 before the game yesterday. That means, in five games, they did enough to win the game. In eight games, they averaged 25 points.”
Talib’s less pessimistic approach isn’t shared by everyone. However, he’s not wrong. The Steelers’ season isn’t defined by one game. They’ve had other poor performances. They got blown out in Week 2 and Week 8. Conversely, they beat two of the best teams in the AFC in the New England Patriots and the Indianapolis Colts.
The Steelers have been inconsistent this year. Unfortunately, they happened to be one of the worst versions of themselves against the Chargers. That included Aaron Rodgers, who had his worst game as a Steeler. However, Talib doesn’t think that Rodgers should take the bulk of the blame for the Steelers’ struggles on offense.
“[Jim] Harbaugh always play [Rodgers] like that. He never beat him. He just don’t beat Harbaugh. You always have that guy who got your fucking number… That offense played bad. It wasn’t just A-Rod. Guys dropped balls.
“If that ball [is thrown] high, Jonnu Smith, you [are] a damn professional tight end, you’ve gotta catch that ball. It’s 3rd down. [You’re] jumping early, you look like one of my 8u players. Find a way to catch that ball. You’re a pro. It’s not just A-Rod.”
As a head coach, Harbaugh is undefeated against Rodgers. He’s 5-0 against the quarterback now. That includes two playoff games. Talib could be correct that Harbaugh has the formula to rattle Rodgers.
Rodgers has recorded 1,231 passing yards, nine touchdowns, and five interceptions in five games against Harbaugh. While that’s not terrible, it’s still not up to Rodgers’ standard, especially because he’s lost all of those games.
However, it’s tough to take too much blame off Rodgers’ shoulders for his performance against the Chargers. He made a lot of mistakes. Yes, Smith could have caught the pass that Talib used as an example, but Rodgers threw a bad ball. The pass was too high, an issue Rodgers had throughout the entire game against the Chargers.
Overall, Rodgers didn’t look comfortable in Week 10. While that performance was concerning, the four-time MVP has had good games with the Steelers. He’s not as bad as his lowest lows, and he’s also not as good as his highest highs. Yes, he needs to be better. However, the Steelers shouldn’t bench him just because of his performance this week. We’ll see which version of Rodgers the Steelers get in Week 11.
