The Washington Commanders made it official on Monday: quarterback Jayden Daniels and wide receiver Terry McLaurin will not play in Week 11 against the Miami Dolphins in Madrid, Spain. The news was not a surprise, as the Commanders have said they planned to reevaluate both after the Week 12 bye. With the team leaving for Madrid on Monday, the Commanders revealed which players would not make the trip.

Also, not going to Madrid is defensive tackle Daron Payne. Payne was suspended one game by the NFL on Monday for throwing a punch at Detroit wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown in Sunday’s loss to the Lions. Payne appealed his suspension, but it was upheld, and he was unable to travel with the team.

Schefter’s list was missing another injured player: McLaurin. Why was McLaurin not on the list?

He traveled with the team to Spain.

Wait, what? So, Daniels, who had his left arm in a brace on Sunday after dislocating his elbow last week, will not make the trip, but McLaurin, who has missed six games and counting, will?

“Terry will go, he’ll not play,” head coach Dan Quinn said on Monday. “Part of that rehab process for him.”

Considering both players are out injured, wouldn’t it make sense for them to stay home and continue their rehab? It’s disappointing for Daniels to be unable to make the trip, especially considering the NFL marketed this game around him. Daniels was at Northwest Stadium for Sunday’s loss to the Detroit Lions. The Commanders have been home the last two weeks, but McLaurin wasn’t spotted in the locker room or on the sideline. That doesn’t mean he wasn’t there, but cameras usually find the injured players at some point.

Let’s go under the assumption that McLaurin was not at either of the last two games since reinjuring his quad in Week 8. How does Washington explain his missing home games but flying overseas with the team not to play, while other injured players remain home? It would make sense for all injured players to stay home to avoid such a long flight.

If McLaurin did indeed not attend the last two home games but is headed to Madrid, it’s a bad look, especially given that Daniels was with the team on Sunday. Perhaps the team told him not to attend and instead to continue focusing on his rehab. That’s quite possible, too. But again, why would he fly overseas as a part of his rehab?

There are a lot of questions here. It’s been a weird year with McLaurin and the Commanders. Beginning with his contract to his injury. Before this season, McLaurin had only missed three career games in six NFL seasons.
