KANSAS CITY, Mo. —

Could Arrowhead Stadium get a roof?

Missouri Gov. Mike Kehoe says it’s an idea worth exploring.

In an interview with The Associated Press, Kehoe suggested the Kansas City Chiefs could make “architectural improvements” to Arrowhead that would make it more weather-resistant without turning it into a full dome.

“There’s some interesting architectural improvements to make to Arrowhead that could be conducive to an all-weather protective environment without being a full dome,” Kehoe said. “I would say, look at some of the structures that are in Europe that may have some sort of fabric device that goes over it.”

Fans like the concept, especially those who have endured freezing temperatures and pouring rain during games.

“A person gets cold,” Chiefs fan Hannah Theisen said. “If there’s a retractable roof, we’ll have the elimination of getting wet and getting cold.”

Kehoe said he still wants Arrowhead to keep its open-air feel and the atmosphere fans love.

Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas said he’s encouraged by the conversation about upgrading the historic stadium.

“I think everybody is excited about the possibilities that exist for a future renovated Arrowhead Stadium,” Lucas said.

Some fans believe a roof could boost Kansas City’s chances of hosting major events — including a Super Bowl.

“I think that’s exactly what we need to get a Super Bowl in Kansas City,” said Chiefs fan Stephen Moss.

Lucas said that while a fully domed stadium can draw more concerts and large-scale events, a partial roof could provide a balance between tradition and opportunity.

“There’s this talk about, well, you build a new dome, you can host more events,” Lucas said. “The problem is there are only so many Beyoncés, so many Taylor Swifts, so many large giant events that you can host. If you add a roof to an existing facility, you have the chance to get some of those economies of scale.”

The Chiefs did not provide a comment or statement in response to Kehoe’s remarks.
