PHILADELPHIA — A.J. Brown has once again voiced his frustrations, bringing even more attention to his up-and-down season. That led to Eagles coach Nick Sirianni getting tired of being asked about Brown’s recent comments and lack of production.
“Guys, I’m close to being done answering these questions with this,” Sirianni said Wednesday at the NovaCare Complex amid the latest Brown controversy.
On Tuesday, after the Eagles’ 10-7 win over the Green Bay Packers on Monday, Brown went on a video game live stream and was asked if he’s doing well. Brown’s response?
“No. Where have you been?” Brown said to gamer Janky Rondo. “Family’s good. Everything else, no. … It’s a ****-show. … You on some, ‘How you been?’ Struggling, brother.”
Later, Brown added: “If you got me on fantasy, get rid of me.”
Brown’s comments came after barely making an impact in the Eagles’ ugly win at Lambeau Field. The three-time All-Pro had two catches for 13 yards vs. Green Bay.
Even though the Eagles are 7-2 overall, it’s been a difficult season individually for Brown. The 28-year-old has 408 receiving yards and three touchdowns on 31 catches in eight games. Brown’s 51 yards per game clip is currently a career low.
On Wednesday, Sirianni was asked four Brown-specific questions in a 13-minute press conference. He was asked about Brown’s lack of targets, his recent comments, his physical ability and, again, the recent comments.
On Brown’s lack of targets (three vs. Green Bay): “There are a lot of plays in that game that are going to him that for different reasons don’t. For instance, (DeVonta Smith’s) touchdown. That play is going to A.J. They took it away, and he threw it over the top. You can’t just look at stats. You can’t paint the picture that way. That’s sometimes all the information you guys may have. But you can’t look at it that way and say that’s how the game is playing out.
“A.J. Brown is one of the best wide receivers in the NFL, so of course we’re trying to get him involved in the game every single time. Sometimes it goes like it did in the Rams game or the Vikings game. And sometimes it goes like it did this last game.”
On if Brown’s comments are a distraction: “No, I don’t think so. You can only go from your interactions with everybody and the way they go about their work on a daily basis that you guys aren’t able to see. But no, it’s business as usual.”
On if Brown is the same player he was in the past: “He’s moving around well. He’s getting out of breaks well. Still physical, strong, quick. I still see all the same physical attributes.”
On Brown suggesting things aren’t “business as usual”: “Guys, I’m close to being done answering these questions with this. He’s working hard, and he is a big part of this game plan, and he’ll be a big part of the game plan moving forward. He’s working like crazy when he’s here, and we’re excited to have him.”
This isn’t the first time Brown has aired his grievances.
After the Eagles beat the Bucs on Sept. 28, a game in which Brown had two catches for nine yards, he posted the following on social media: “If you’re not welcomed, not listened to, quietly withdraw,” Brown shared. “Don’t make a scene. Shrug your shoulders and be on your way.”
Brown later acknowledged that he let his “frustrations boil over” with that post. But he also said that “it’s fair to want the ball.”
Brown’s frustrations and lack of involvement led to chatter that he could be dealt before last week’s NFL trade deadline. The Eagles are trying to win back-to-back Super Bowls and Brown is one of the best receivers in the league, so that didn’t happen for obvious reasons.
But Brown calling his season so far a “****-show” doesn’t help the situation — and it’s making Sirianni field questions he clearly is over answering.
