No team is even close to the Rams when it comes to blocking in the run game

There’s little question that Matthew Stafford, Puka Nacua and Davante Adams have been the catalysts of the Los Angeles Rams’ offense. Stafford leads the NFL in touchdown passes and yards per game, Adams is tops in the league with nine touchdown catches and Nacua ranks second in receiving yards per game.

However, as impressive as the passing attack has been, the Rams are winning in the trenches. Their offensive line has made major strides this season now that it’s healthy, particularly in the run game. There is no weak link on that unit anymore, whether the Rams want to run between the tackles or to the outside.

Pro Football Focus’ grading system puts into perspective just how dominant the Rams’ run blocking has been this year. PFF has given the Rams a grade of 89.1 in that department, making them the only team with a grade higher than 78.2. They’re miles ahead of everyone else, with the Lions (78.2) and Colts (78.0) ranking second and third, respectively.

Here’s a look at the run-blocking grades of the Rams’ notable linemen who have played this season.

Coleman Shelton: 88.6Kevin Dotson: 87.7Warren McClendon Jr.: 82.4Beaux Limmer: 82.3Steve Avila: 80.0Alaric Jackson: 79.9Justin Dedich: 77.9Rob Havenstein: 62.3

It’s remarkable that seven of the Rams’ eight offensive linemen have had run-blocking grades of 77.9 or higher. It’s also surprising that Havenstein, heralded as one of the most reliable right tackles, is the only exception to that group.

Shelton has elevated the center position after coming over in free agency this offseason, though Limmer has performed well in the run game when called upon this season; it’s pass protection where he struggles.

Dotson has always been great as a road-grading run blocker, as has Avila. And Jackson plays with an edge at left tackle that makes him a terrific run-blocker on the outside.

No matter who the Rams plug in on the offensive line, they have success blocking in the run game.

It helps the team’s overall grade that Davis Allen, Tyler Higbee, Colby Parkinson and Terrance Ferguson all have run-blocking grades between 65.1 and 71.0, too. Their impact as blocking tight ends has a major effect on Kyren Williams and Blake Corum when they run off-tackle.

The Rams’ O-line will face a big test against the Seattle Seahawks this Sunday, a team that ranks fifth in run defense grade at PFF. Staying balanced is a big priority for Los Angeles so it’s important that the offense establishes the run and utilizes play-action passes often.
