The New York Jets (2-7) will be looking for their third win in a row after defeating the Cleveland Browns 27-20 in Week 10.

It will be a major challenge as they’ll have to prepare on a short week to face Drake Maye and the New England Patriots (8-2) in a big divisional matchup. New England has won seven games in a row after beating the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on the road at Raymond James Stadium.

Here are Jets Wire’s three keys to victory for the Jets to beat the Patriots in Week 11:

Next Man Up

In his first game back from a hyperextended knee, Garrett Wilson suffered another knee injury that will keep him out for the next three to four weeks.  There’s a good chance the Jets could shut down their best receiver for the remainder of the season as the odds of them clinching a playoff spot are slim to none and there is no need to take an unnecessary risk.

With Wilson out, the Jets will have to adopt the next man up philosophy at wide receiver on a short week.  John Metchie III saw very limited action and Adonai Mitchell was inactive against the Browns. Expect both to play bigger roles against the Patriots along with rookies Arian Smith and Mason Taylor in the Jets passing game. It may not be the most talented group of receivers, but Tanner Engstrand needs to have confidence in this unit to make plays in order to establish the run with Breece Hall.

The Quick Hook

It’s tough to know what the strategy for the Jets is going into the final eight games of the season. Are they trying to win or are they more concerned with draft position? Aaron Glenn is once again keeping his starting quarterback a secret until the last minute, but it would be a shock if it wasn’t Justin Fields.

Fields is coming off another brutal performance in Week 10 where he threw for only 54 yards and his first interception of the season. He did throw the screen pass to Hall that resulted in a 42 yard touchdown, but outside of that, it was another forgettable performance.

The Patriots will stack the box against Hall and try to force Fields to beat them through the air. The Jets have won two games in a row and another poor start from Fields could really hurt their confidence. Glenn needs to be ready to pull his quarterback if he struggles out of the gate. That kind of message could show the team that their head coach is serious about winning and motivate them to stun the Patriots with a win on their home field.

Stay Disciplined On Defense

While the Jets had six sacks against rookie Dillon Gabriel in Week 10, the Browns quarterback still managed 54 rushing yards because the defense gave him too much room to run on plays where he did beat the pass rush. It’s been a common theme for this defense all season and this needs to be fixed if they have any chance to beat Drake Maye, an early favorite for MVP.

The linebackers and the secondary need to stay disciplined and serve as spies on the Patriots quarterback. They cannot afford to allow him to avoid the sack and run for big yardage, especially on third down. The defense is still a work in progress and while they’ve given up some big plays, they’ve also held their own in big spots as well. It’s a tough test but a strong performance against one of the top teams in the conference, win or loss, would send a statement to the rest of the league.
