The first NJSIAA football championship game was played between Brick Township and Camden in 1974.The game was played indoors on artificial grass at Convention Hall in Atlantic City.Brick secured the win by stopping a two-point conversion attempt in the fourth quarter.

It didn’t look good for Brick Township at the start of the very first NJSIAA football championship game in 1974. Camden appeared to have scored on the opening kickoff – but the head referee waved off the play, ruling that the game had not officially been started. Brick went on to win that game.

A bumpy beginning for sure, but the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association has been awarding championships on the field ever since. Before 1974, the NJSIAA awarded sectional championships without actually having playoff games.
