Although the New Orleans Saints are on their bye week, they managed to make headlines this Friday.

Saints owner Gayle Benson went on record to discuss the team’s 2-8 start to the 2025 season as well as all the outrage regarding general manager Mickey Loomis. There are plenty of fans calling for his job. However, ownership in New Orleans has zero plans to get rid of Loomis.

“It may not be what the fans want to hear, but as far as firing Mickey Loomis, that’s ridiculous,” Benson told Jeff Duncan of NOLA.com. “[He] does a great job.”

Benson continued, “You don’t think Mickey Loomis is losing sleep at night over all of this? He is. It’s hard. It’s not an easy job. It’s not like he’s sitting on his butt, not worrying about things.”

Saints fans fire back.

Immediately after this interview was released by Duncan, countless Saints fans expressed their frustration with Benson online.

“Gayle should be holding Mickey accountable based off her own volition, not relying solely on others,” one fan said. “Completely undermines her leadership of the franchise.”

“Running franchises based on your out of touch inner circle vibes instead of results is a sure fire way of getting hated in this town,” a second fan wrote on X.

“This franchise will never have success until she sells the team unless they get incredibly lucky at QB. And this is why,” another fan declared.

“It’s laughable that Gayle Benson still won’t hold Mickey Loomis accountable for being a bad GM,” a fourth fan commented.

Just a month ago, Forbes named Benson the most powerful women in American sports.

“Gayle Benson made history in 2018 when she became the only woman to own both an NFL and NBA franchise, taking control of the New Orleans Saints and the New Orleans Pelicans after the death of her husband, Tom. The two teams now carry a combined valuation of $8.35 billion while Benson herself has an estimated net worth of $7.9 billion,” Forbes wrote. “She has been central to the NFL’s international ambitions, with the Saints becoming the first franchise with marketing rights in France and partnering with the Paris Musketeers of the European League of Football (ELF).”

Benson doesn’t seem to be feeling any pressure from the fans in New Orleans. That doesn’t change the fact that her franchise has been awfully disappointing in the post-Drew Brees era.

The Saints haven’t reached the playoffs since the 2020 season.
