Could Alabama QB Ty Simpson have a Heisman game against Oklahoma?
The Crimson Tide quarterback is a Heisman Trophy frontrunner, but he could get a boost against the Sooners, as The Tuscaloosa News’ Colin Gay explains.
Alabama football’s undefeated run through the Southeastern Conference has come to an end.
An uncharacteristic three-turnover day from Ty Simpson and Co. led the fourth-ranked Crimson Tide (No. 4 in College Football Playoff rankings) to be upset 23-21 by No. 10 Oklahoma on Saturday, Saturday, Nov. 15 at Bryant-Denny Stadium in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.
The loss for Alabama is its first in SEC play and first since Week 1 of the college football season. It also ends Alabama’s nation-leading 17-game win streak at home.

Ty Simpson completed 28 of 42 passes for 326 yards with a touchdown and an interception, which was returned for 87 yards by Eli Bowen in the first quarter to give Oklahoma an early 10-0 lead. His counterpart, John Mateer, completed 15 of 23 passes for 138 yards. Mateer also had a 20-yard rushing touchdown in the first half.
Alabama took a 21-20 lead midway through the third quarter off Daniel Hill’s second 1-yard rushing score of the day. That was the last touchdown score of the day from Alabama, as the Crimson Tide finished with two punts, a fumble and a turnover on downs on their final four drives of the night.
Saturday’s game in Tuscaloosa had CF implications for both teams. With its win, Oklahoma’s CFP hopes stay alive for at least one more week while the loss could knock Alabama out from a top-four seed going into the third CFP rankings revealing.

Ty Simpson takes a costly 11-yard sack on the first play out of the two-minute timeout to set up a second-and-21 for Alabama. It’s the fourth sack of the afternoon from Oklahoma’s defense.
Alabama picks up the first down on fourth-and-1 just before the two-minute timeout off a 2-yard jet sweep carry from Lotzeir Brooks. Ty Simpson will now look to have his Heisman Moment by leading the Crimson Tide to a walk-off field goal or touchdown.
Oklahoma leads 23-21 with two minutes remaining in the fourth quarter.
Oklahoma sends the pressure on third-and-5, and Devon Jordan finds his way to Ty Simpson for a 7-yard sack.
Tate Sandell puts Oklahoma back in front of Alabama at 23-21 with a successful 24-yard field goal. The Sooners’ scoring drive was set up by another Crimson Tide miscue, as Taylor Wein delivered a hit on Ty Simpson that knocked the ball out of his hands for the fumble.
Alabama will now look to respond, trailing by two points.
Alabama takes a 21-20 lead over Oklahoma into the fourth quarter in Tuscaloosa. The Sooners will open up the fourth quarter with a second-and-goal at the Crimson Tide’s 10-yard line looking to retake the lead.
Oklahoma’s defense comes up with the fumble recovery after Taylor Wein strip-sacks Ty Simpson. It’s the third turnover of the afternoon for the Crimson Tide, who entered the day with just six on the season.
The Sooners take over at the Crimson Tide’s 28-yard line.
Yhonzae Pierre reads Oklahoma’s play call on third-and-2 perfectly, as he pushes back Sooners running back Tory Blaylock four yards on the tackle. Pierre’s tackle for a loss sends Oklahoma’s punt unit out for the fourth time.
All momentum with Alabama right now.
Just like that, Alabama is out in front.
Daniel Hill finishes off the Crimson Tide’s first offensive drive of the second half with a 1-yard rushing touchdown off the direct snap. It is the second score of the game for Hill, who is now at 48 rushing yards on 10 carries.
Alabama showed a nice balance between the run and pass game on its seven-play drive, as Hill had a 28-yard carry up the right side while Ty Simpson connected with Josh Cuevas and Isaiah Horton for 20- and 26-yard catches, respectively.
Tate Sandell extends Oklahoma’s lead over Alabama to six points with a 52-yard field goal attempt. He is now 7 of 7 in field goal attempts of at least 50 yards this season.
The Crimson Tide had the Sooners at third-and-long twice on the drive but were unable to get a stop that would have sent the punt unit out. The scoring drive was eight plays for 41 yards and took 4:22 off the game clock.
John Mateer hits Isaiah Sategna up the right sideline for a 21-yard catch on third-and-13 to pick up the first down. It’s a big-time throw from Mateer as it extends the Sooners’ opening drive and avoids another sack by the Crimson Tide defense.
Alabama comes up short of tying the game going into halftime, as Conor Talty has his 37-yard field goal attempt partially blocked as time expired. With Talty’s missed field goal attempt, Oklahoma leads Alabama 17-14 going into halftime.
Ty Simpson found Isaiah Horton wide open down the field for a 15-yard catch on fourth-and-10 to get into field goal range. The ABC cameras caught Talty screaming at his long snapper as Alabama was running off the field into the locker rooms.
Alabama avoids a face mask penalty on third-and-7 after John Mateer throws the ball away, and it results in Oklahoma sending out the punt unit for the third time on the afternoon. The momentum is slowly shifting to the Crimson Tide’s side in this one.
The Crimson Tide will start with the ball at its own 13-yard line with 3:16 remaining in the second quarter, trailing 17-14.
Ty Simpson provides Alabama with a quick score on a 25-yard touchdown pass to Josh Cuevas across the middle. It’s a nice pass-and-play executive by the Crimson Tide to get the ball out quickly to Cuevas. Simpson was 4-of-5 passing for 75 yards on the drive for the Crimson Tide.
The scoring drive was six plays for 78 yards and took 2:28 off the game clock.
John Mateer extends Oklahoma’s lead over Alabama to 17-7 after a 20-yard quarterback carry up the middle.
The score from Mateer was set up by a fumble recovery from the Sooners’ special teams unit, as Jayden Hardy punched the ball out of the hands of Alabama star receiver Ryan Williams on the punt return. The fumble from Williams is the second costly turnover for Alabama on the day.
Daniel Hill plunges into the end zone to put Alabama on the board with a 1-yard rushing touchdown. Hill’s touchdown score comes two plays after the Crimson Tide caught a big break, as Kendal Daniels was called for defensive pass interference after the Sooners picked off Ty Simpson in the end zone.
The scoring drive was 12 plays for 72 yards and took 6:21 off the game clock.
That’s one quarter down with Alabama once again driving near midfield but now facing a two-score deficit following the ill-timed interception by Simpson. The Crimson Tide face second-and-8 from their own 42-yardline when the game resumes.
What looked like a promising Alabama drive instead turned into points for Oklahoma. Simpson’s pass is errant on third-and-3 and it’s taken all the way back by Eli Bowen, 87 yards, to put the Sooners up 10-0.
Alabama now has as many first downs as possessions, with three on its third drive of the game. The Crimson Tide are approaching the Oklahoma red zone.
Another Alabama possession, another three-and-out. Oklahoma set the tone on this defensive outing with an 8-yard sack of quarterback Ty Simpson on first down. Crimson Tide fans might grumble on a no-call of a potential defensive pass interference against Ryan Williams on a deep ball on third down, but another punt puts Oklahoma at its own 39-yard line.
Oklahoma gets great field position but can only muster a field goal after Sategna’s return. Still, it’s an early victory for the Sooners, whose defense helped jump-start a 3-0 lead for the road team.
Following a quick three-and-out by Alabama, Crimson Tide punter Blake Doud punts it 49 yards. It’s returned by Isaiah Sategna III at the Oklahoma 28-yard line, and he returns it 42 yards to the Alabama 30.
Oklahoma wins the toss and defers to receive the second-half kickoff. Alabama will start on offense.
Oklahoma star defensive lineman R Mason Thomas has been ruled out against Alabama, according to the final SEC injury availability report. Thomas sustained an injury before the Sooners’ win over Tennessee prior to their bye week last week on his scoop-and-score touchdown.

Alabama vs Oklahoma predictions
Colin Gay, The Tuscaloosa News: Alabama 20, Oklahoma 17
“This game feels completely different than a year ago, one with clear College Football Playoff implications hovering over Bryant-Denny Stadium. But just like Vanderbilt and Tennessee before them, Alabama had revenge on its mind, something that should be enough to carry the Crimson Tide to another SEC home victory.”
Chase Goodbread, The Tuscaloosa News: Alabama 24, Oklahoma 20
“A year after Oklahoma eliminated Alabama from College Football Playoff contention, the Crimson Tide can all but do the same to OU. Meanwhile, UA’s own postseason aspirations have largely come down to winning this game. From a motivational standpoint, Alabama’s needle will be in the red.”
