The San Francisco 49ers on Saturday announced a trio of roster moves leading up to their Week 11 matchup against the Arizona Cardinals.
With quarterback Brock Purdy now healthy and expected to start, Mac Jones will move back into a backup QB role which made QB Adrian Martinez expendable. Martinez was the backup signal caller for all eight games Purdy missed with a toe injury. The 49ers waived Martinez and used his vacated roster spot to promote defensive end Clelin Ferrell who has been active the last two weeks as a standard practice squad elevation. He’s now part of the 53-man roster.
The third move the club made was elevating cornerback Eli Apple. This doesn’t bode well for CB Deommodore Lenoir who is nursing a calf injury that cropped up in Thursday’s practice. Lenoir is officially questionable, but the elevation of an extra CB would indicate that he isn’t trending the right way.
Apple, a former first-round pick, was elevated in Week 4 when the 49ers had some injury issues at cornerback. He played three special teams snaps and no defensive snaps in the loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars. He’d likely be in a reserve role again Sunday with Darrell Luter Jr. expected to snag the starting spot opposite Renardo Green.
The 49ers and Cardinals kick off at 1:05pm Pacific Time from State Farm Stadium.
