The Washington Commanders got to take part in the first-ever NFL game in Spain in Week 11.

The Commanders took on the Miami Dolphins and entered the game on a five-game losing streak. Injuries and inconsistency have thrown the Commanders’ season into turmoil, but the hope was that a win overseas would give the team some momentum as they await the eventual return of Jayden Daniels.

However, the Commanders managed to muster just 13 points and ended up falling by three in overtime. There was a chance for the Commanders to win before overtime, though.

With the game tied at 13 with under two minutes to play, the Commanders had the ball and were driving down the field. The team was able to get to the Miami 38-yard line to set up a Matt Gay 56-yard field goal with 15 seconds left. Unfortunately, Gay pushed the kick wide right, which sent the game to overtime, where the Commanders would lose.

Gay also missed a field goal in the second quarter, and in a three-point game, leaving six points on the board is devastating. After the game, Gay spoke about his performance and said that he let his team down.

“I let my team down today,” said Gay. “Not just one, but two kicks today. The game changes if I make those kicks. It just sucks.”

It’s even more disappointing considering a solid defensive performance was wasted. The Commanders held the Dolphins to 311 total yards and didn’t allow a passing touchdown. The unit also collected three sacks and six tackles for loss.

This isn’t the first game that Gay has struggled to hit his kicks in 2025. The veteran is now 13-of-19 on the year and has only hit 4-of-9 field goals from 50+ yards.

The Commanders have now lost six consecutive games and are 3-8 on the season. The next opportunity for the team will be against the Denver Broncos in Week 13 after a bye week in Week 12.
