If you’ve picked up a paper or clicked on a sports website over the past week, you’ll understand why it’s been a difficult week for the Dallas Cowboys.

What was originally supposed to be a getaway week with the team on bye turned tragic after the death of 24-year-old defensive lineman Marshawn Kneeland last Thursday.

Needless to say, it’s a lot for a first-year head coach in the NFL to handle. And yet, those around Brian Schottenheimer seem thoroughly impressed with how he’s doing.

Cowboys COO and co-owner Stephen Jones made his weekly appearance on 105.3 The Fan (KRLD-FM) on Friday where he was asked about his coach’s handling of the trying events of the past week. Jones offered rave reviews for how Schottenheimer has dealt with his players and the locker room as a whole, as well as how he’s presented himself publicly while, according to Schotteheimer himself, really hurting.

Question: How’d the bye week treat you?

Jones: “As you know, we had some real challenges, things that put everything into perspective, but I’m certainly sure our team will be resilient. And I think our head coach said it best: We’re not ever gonna move on from [Marshawn Kneeland], but we will move forward.

Question: That was a terrific line, and you gotta love how Schotty has the ability to put his arms around a situation and provide some comfort, or wisdom, or how would you describe it?

Jones: “I think that’s right, I just think it comes back to his authenticity. He’s got a big heart. Everything about him’s real. I know the team feels that way about him. I know his staff does, and I know certainly management and ownership feel the same way. I think he’s just done an outstanding job working with our team, working through the staff. You know, as we said, we’re going through a really difficult situation that certainly puts everything into perspective.”
