As the league investigates, Chase could potentially now be at risk of punitive action for his role in the incident, with there being precedent for the NFL issuing suspensions for players who spit on others. The most recent example of this came after Philadelphia Eagles defensive tackle Jalen Carter spat on Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott during the teams’ Week 1 opener in September. Carter was later suspended for one game.

If issued a suspension, it could sideline Cincinnati’s star wide receiver at a time when the struggling team is expected to take on the league-best New England Patriots next weekend.

Immediately after the incident occurred, Chase was not issued any penalty for his role in the altercation, and was permitted by referees to finish the game.

The Steelers would ultimately go on to hand the Bengals their third loss in a row, with Cincinnati falling short 34-12 in Pittsburgh. The team now stands at a 3-7 record this season.
