The Pittsburgh Steelers’ 34-12 win over the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 11 didn’t come without some controversy. In classic Bengals-Steelers fashion, there was plenty of bad blood throughout the game. The biggest example came when Ja’Marr Chase and Jalen Ramsey got into an altercation in the fourth quarter. That ultimately led to Ramsey getting ejected. However, it was later revealed that Chase provoked Ramsey by spitting on him. James Harrison thought Ramsey did a good job of keeping his cool, all things considered.
“Jalen, you better than me,” Harrison said Monday on his Deebo and Joe podcast. “I would’ve still been trying to get him. I don’t even think this is gonna stop here. If you spit on me, I’m gonna find out where you’re at in the offseason. NFL, you need to make an example of this cat and give him four, six games [suspension] to let these dudes know.
“Because this is something that could spill off of the field on into the offseason. They wouldn’t have been able to get me off the field. I’d have been sitting in his locker under something, waiting. I’d of went to jail. I’d at least try to at least get all the way rip his helmet off. Wouldn’t have been no stopping. Helmet would’ve been off. The old me would’ve cleared both sides. I would not have let go.”
Harrison isn’t joking. He was a force to be reckoned with in his prime. He built a reputation as one of the most intimidating figures in the league. There were many instances when he enforced his will upon opponents. Sometimes, that even included fans running on to the field.
Therefore, had someone spit on him, he likely would’ve reacted with a ton of fire. Ramsey initially showed a lot of anger, throwing a punch at Chase. The two of them got into a scrum after that and had to be separated. However, Ramsey didn’t continue to drag the situation out. He went to the sideline, and eventually he got off the field.
At the time, it looked like Ramsey was in the wrong. Initially, there wasn’t clear evidence that Chase spit on him, so it looked like Ramsey simply lost his cool. However, with the proof available now, it’s easier to understand why he flew off the handle.
While Chase denied after the game that he spit on Ramsey, that has been proven otherwise. Ramsey got the worst punishment out of that initial encounter, but now Chase could face more serious consequences.
Chase could get suspended for his actions. though it’s unclear for how many games if it happens. It likely wouldn’t be as along as Harrison wants it to be, but any games lost from Chase would be detrimental to the Bengals’ season. They’re already hanging on by a thread in the playoff hunt. Losing Chase could really sink their ship.
While Ramsey could’ve escalated the situation like Harrison might have, it’s good that he opted to just drop it and leave the field. The Steelers won, and now, Chase is in hot water. Ramsey got the last laugh.
