The Bengals will have 46 active players when they host the Patriots at Paycor Stadium on Sunday.
Patriots fans just might not recognize many of them.
The NFL on Monday afternoon announced wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase has been suspended for one game after an act of unsportsmanlike conduct against the Steelers. Chase spit on Steelers cornerback Jalen Ramsey during an on-field altercation in Cincinnati’s Week 11 loss, according to the league’s statement.
The 2024 First Team All-Pro, who denied spitting on Ramsey, can appeal his suspension. But it feels unlikely any appeal will be granted.
Bengals star defender Trey Hendrickson is doubtful to play against the Patriots, Bengals head coach Zac Taylor told reporters Monday. The 2024 First Team All-Pro defensive end, who was linked to New England in trade speculation before the deadline, reportedly is dealing with a sports hernia injury and needs surgery.
Hendrickson could try to push surgery into the offseason, but it’s unlikely he’ll go toe-to-toe with Patriots QB Drake Maye in Week 12.
Meanwhile, Joe Burrow has not played since Week 2 after he suffered a turf toe injury which required surgery. The Bengals’ star quarterback remains on injured reserve, and while he has been designated to return this season, such return won’t come Sunday.
No Burrow. No Hendrickson. No Chase. No good.
Anyone else? Well, Bengals cornerback Cam Taylor-Britt also won’t play as he likely needs season-ending Lisfranc surgery, Taylor revealed.
Taylor-Britt hasn’t had the same impact as those other players, of course. Cincinnati enters Week 12 dead last in points and yards allowed this season. The Bengals defense has allowed more rushing yards and more passing touchdowns than any team in the league. According to FTN Fantasy’s Aaron Schatz, the Bengals have the worst defensive DVOA ever measured through 10 games.
Now, they’ll have to play without their best pass-rusher and starting cornerback.
A few names Patriots fans will recognize: QB Joe Flacco and wide receiver Tee Higgins. They’ll have a tough task going against the heavily-favored Patriots, who rank second in the AFC with a 9-2 record.
