Analyzing Detroit Lions’ 16-9 loss to Philadelphia Eagles
Free Press sports writers Jeff Seidel and Shawn Windsor break down the Detroit Lions’ 16-9 loss to the Eagles on Sunday, Nov. 16.
The Detroit Lions had a significant stumble against the Philadelphia Eagles and look to get back on track against another NFC East opponent.
The Lions (6-4, 3rd in NFC North) will be hosting the New York Giants (2-9, 4th in NFC East) on Sunday, Nov. 23 at Ford Field in Detroit. The game will kick off at 1 p.m. ET and will be televised on Fox.
Detroit is coming off a sloppy 16-9 Week 11 loss to the Eagles in Philadelphia, dropping the Lions out of the NFC playoff picture with seven games remaining. The Lions have more critical matchups coming up against playoff contenders, with a Thanksgiving Day game against the Green Bay Packers and a Week 15 game against the first-place Los Angeles Rams potentially determining their place among the NFC’s best teams.
But first comes a home game against the Giants, who at 2-9 have the worst record in the NFC.
Here’s what you need to know about Detroit’s upcoming matchup, plus an early prediction.
Lions vs Giants prediction
The bad news for the Lions is this upcoming game against the Giants is closer to “must win” than anyone in Detroit would like it to be. The good news? They’re playing the Giants.
Not only do the Giants have five straight losses, many in excruciating fashion, but they could be missing their starting quarterback Jaxson Dart (concussion protocol) for a second straight game. Standout rookie running back Cam Skattebo (ankle) and second-year receiver Malik Nabers (knee) are both out for the season. That’s a bad break for New York, which promoted third-string quarterback Jameis Winston for his first start of the season in a 27-20 loss to the Green Bay Packers on Sunday.
The Giants, with interim coach Mike Kafka entering his second game, have still run the ball well without Skattebo, relying on Tyrone Tracy Jr. and Devin Singletary, but their defense gives up the third-most rushing yards per game while also sporting a bottom-10 secondary by passing yards allowed. And now that the Lions need this win to not fall behind even further in the NFC playoff race, they’ll be motivated enough to run through a lesser opponent. The pick: Lions 34, Giants 17.
