The Pittsburgh Steelers started to make a big change in their wide receiver rotation on Sunday in their 34-12 win over the Cincinnati Bengals.

Roman Wilson, the team’s third round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, has steadily received more of a role in the offense, but it now seems that he has overtaken Calvin Austin III as the team’s WR2.

Wilson outsnapped Austin significantly. The Michigan product played 37 snaps to Austin’s 19 snaps, and ran 13 more routes than Austin did on the day, too. It is clear when the Steelers went into their two wide receiver sets they rolled the ball out there for Wilson more than Austin.

Offensive coordinator Arthur Smith had a lot of praise for Wilson last Thursday, praising the wide receiver’s ability to adapt to circumstances and take advantage of the snaps he is given.

“He’s slowly but surely is starting to make more plays… It’s an ongoing process. He’s starting to show signs of his role increasing,” Smith said.

Wilson’s work as a run blocker and some of his standout moments, even in lower weighted moments, earned him the chance. He had just one catch on the day, which was a critical third down conversion on third-and-11 where he routed a cornerback up on an out route.

The Steelers seem to have liked what they have seen from Wilson, and his role is likely to increase moving forward.
