The San Francisco 49ers are once again on the hunt for a kicker.
Eddy Pineiro is dealing with a Grade 1 hamstring strain according to head coach Kyle Shanahan and is officially considered week-to-week. Signs point to Pineiro missing at least Week 12 when the 49ers host the Carolina Panthers at Levi’s Stadium, which means for the third time in two seasons the 49ers will need a midseason injury replacement at kicker.
Last season kicker Jake Moody suffered a high ankle sprain and was out for three games. In that stretch of three games another 49ers kicker, Matthew Wright, sustained an injury and needed to be replaced after one game.
Shanahan said the club would be bringing in kickers for tryouts. Here are a handful of free agent options the 49ers could explore:
Anders Carlson
The Athletic’s Matt Barrows reported Carlson will be part of the 49ers’ tryout. He spent two games in San Francisco last season and went five-for-five on his field goals and three-for-four on extra points. Since joining the NFL in 2023 with the Green Bay Packers he has played in 24 games and connected on 40-of-48 field goal tries, including a perfect 25-for-25 on kicks inside 40 yards.
John Parker Romo
Barrows also reported Romo will be in the tryout, which Shanahan said will take place either Tuesday or Wednesday. Romo kicked in seven games for the Atlanta Falcons this year and missed a pair of kicks in his second game with the club, but the incident that led to his release was a late missed extra point in a one-point loss to the New England Patriots. Romo has played in 11 games with the Minnesota Vikings and Falcons since the start of last season. He’s 22-of-26 on field goals and 19-of-21 on extra points.
Greg Joseph
The 49ers are very familiar with Joseph who lost a kicker battle to Jake Moody in training camp. Joseph was let go due to some other roster issues and injuries, and it isn’t out of the realm of possibilities they bring him back for the regular season. Joseph kicked for current 49ers special teams coordinator Brant Boyer for one game last season. In six seasons he’s played in 75 games and made 82.3 percent of his 141 kicks. He also hit 90.8 percent of his 173 extra point tries.
Matt Gay
Gay was released by the Washington Commanders after he missed a pair of field goals in Washington’s Week 11 loss to the Miami Dolphins. In 100 games across seven seasons he’s made 84 percent of his 212 tries. In 2021 he was a Pro Bowler with the Los Angeles Rams for hitting 32-of-34 field goals and 48-of-49 extra points.
