Seattle Seahawks veteran nose tackle Johnathan Hankins won’t return to play this season, head coach Mike Macdonald told reporters on Wednesday. The 33-year-old Hankins has been on the non-football injury list with a back injury since the start of training camp.
Stacy Rost: How Seattle Seahawks offseason moves grade out now
Hankins re-signed on a one-year deal with Seattle in late April after appearing in all 17 games for the Seahawks in 2024. He played 34.5% of Seattle’s defensive snaps last year, recording one sack, five tackles for loss, 30 tackles, a pass breakup and an interception. He received the lowest Pro Football Focus grade of his 12-year NFL career, ranking 115th out of 118 qualified defensive tackles.
The Seahawks’ interior defensive line has been among the league’s best this season, headlined by Leonard Williams, Jarran Reed and Byron Murphy II. Brandon Pili and Mike Morris have also played key rotational roles.
• Macdonald also said rookie left guard Grey Zabel, rookie wide receiver Tory Horton and linebacker Tyrice Knight won’t practice on Wednesday due to injuries.

Zabel, who has started all 10 games at left guard this season, suffered a knee injury in the closing minutes of Seattle’s 21-19 loss to the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday. Macdonald said Monday that imaging on Zabel’s left knee showed no significant injury and that the first-round draft pick was “day to day.”
Horton has missed the past two games due to groin and shin injuries. Knight is in concussion protocol after delivering a big hit on a kickoff against the Rams.
• Macdonald is hopeful that veteran safety Julian Love (hamstring) and veteran run-blocking tight end Eric Saubert (calf) can return to practice next week when they’re eligible to be activated off injured reserve, but said both still have landmarks they have to clear in their rehab.
• Macdonald said rookie defensive end Rylie Mills could be within a couple weeks of returning to practice. Mills, a fifth-round draft pick out of Notre Dame, has been on the NFI list since the start of training camp as he recovers from a torn ACL that he suffered in a College Football Playoff game last December.
“He’s not one of those guys that would be activated and then be ready to go,” Macdonald said. “He’s gonna need some football work. But I think we’re getting closer.”
