The New York Jets are adding veteran help to their defensive line.

The team agreed to terms with experienced defensive tackle Khalen Saunders earlier this week. NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero was first to report the news.

New York (2-8) has acquired multiple defensive tackles throughout this season. Saunders joins a lengthy list that includes Jowon Briggs, Mazi Smith, and Harrison Phillips.

General manager Darren Mougey and head coachAaron Glenn have been searching for solutions across the interior of their defense.

The need at defensive tackle became bigger than ever following the decision to trade Quinnen Williams to the Dallas Cowboys at the deadline. Smith was acquired by the Jets in that agreement. Saunders offers more veteran experience and versatility than Smith does.

Saunders was released by the Jacksonville Jaguars last week. He received immediate interest on the market from the likes of the Jets, Baltimore Ravens, Kansas City Chiefs, and Arizona Cardinals, according to NFL insider Jordan Schultz.

It’s a bit surprising Saunders chose the Jets over potential playoff contenders, especially Kansas City, where he previously won two Super Bowls.

Saunders is a big-bodied defensive tackle who is a run-stopping force. He isn’t a high-upside pass rusher, but did record a career-high 3.5 sacks in 2022.

The Jets should quickly get Saunders mixed into their D-line rotation.
