INDIANAPOLIS – Colts quarterback Daniel Jones was a limited participant in Thursday’s practice with a calf injury, according to the team’s practice report released this afternoon. It’s the first time Colts starter has appeared on the team’s injury report entering his 11th game with his new team this season.

Jones was not listed with any issues on the team’s Wednesday practice report, so it’s not immediately clear the severity of the issue or any potential concerns about his capability of starting as planned in Sunday’s Week 12 road game against the Kansas City Chiefs.

Jones won out in a training camp battle for the Colts starting spot this summer over 2023 fourth-overall pick Anthony Richardson, who continues to remain on IR with an orbital fracture he suffered in pre-game warmups ahead of the team’s Oct. 12 game against the Cardinals. Richardson underwent surgery to repair the fracture shortly after the freak accident, which involved an apparatus snapping after he’d tied a resistance band to it. Richardson would’ve been eligible to have his 21-day practice window opened this week to spur a potential return to the active lineup off IR, but Colts head coach Shane Steichen told reporters this week that Richardson continues to rehab.

When and if that time comes, Steichen said an active Richardson would return to his spot as the Colts’ backup quarterback, a role that rookie Riley Leonard has served since mid-October. The Colts also signed veteran Brett Rypien to the practice squad as an emergency option in Richardson’s absence.
