Kansas City Chiefs special teams coordinator Dave Toub wasn’t giving special treatment to the President of the United States.

Donald Trump has interjected himself into the NFL a lot in recent years. Most recently, he hopped in the booth as the Washington Commanders played the Detroit Lions at Northwest Field, and even gave some play-by-play coverage of the game. It was quite the spectacle, if you ask me, and before he left, he told the FOX broadcasters that he’d like to have their job someday.

Say what you want about Trump, but he’s a funny guy.

Then you’ve got the story where President Trump is encouraging the Washington Commanders organization to name their new stadium after himself. Reports surfaced that Trump has been in close communication with owner Josh Harris to potentially name the new stadium Trump Field.

If that were to happen, you can bet that the POTUS will have a surefire favorite NFL team. In the past, Trump has leaned more towards being a Kansas City Chiefs fan, mainly because Patrick Mahomes’ mother, Randi Mahomes, and his wife, Brittany Mahomes, both supported Trump during the 2024 election.

Trump became the first sitting president to attend the Super Bowl this past year, and he had high praise for the Chiefs and Mahomes ahead of the game when he wrongly predicted that Kansas City would three-peat:

“I’ve watched this great quarterback, who has by the way a phenomenal wife, by the way. She’s a Trump fan, she’s a MAGA fan, so I happen to love her, ok? But she’s a great person. I watched her being interviewed, I said, ‘Boy, that’s pretty good.’ But she’s great. And he’s great.”

So like I said, Donald Trump has certainly made his presence felt in the NFL.

And that continued when he criticized the kickoff format that the NFL has adopted, which is a far reach from how kickoffs have traditionally been handled. Now, the kicking team and the receiving team are both lined up on the receiving team’s side of the field, and can only move when the football is caught by the receiving team.

There’s a landing zone, new touchback rules… it’s all a little bit confusing, and much more complex than things used to be. That’s why President Trump said he was against it.

Kansas City Chiefs special teams coordinator Dave Toub knows a lot about the new kickoff format since, you know, that’s kind of his job. And when a reporter asked him about Trump’s views on the modified kickoff rules, Toub didn’t even let the media member get their full question off. The Kansas City coordinator was short with his response, saying:

“He doesn’t even know what he’s looking at. He has no idea what’s going on. Take that for what it’s worth. And I hope he hears it.”

Pretty short response, eh?

Obviously, the Kansas City Chiefs season isn’t going all that well. Rumblings of the reign of the “Chiefs Kingdom” being over have spread on the internet like wildfire, and this answer from Dave Toub could just be a little insight into the tension that is being felt as Mahomes and the Chiefs fight to get back into the playoff picture.

There’s also the side of things where the special teams coach might be a little tired of politics and sports intertwining… specifically within the Chiefs organization. Gracie Hunt, the daughter of Kansas City Chiefs owner Clark Hunt, just publicly endorsed the idea of another country artist headlining the Super Bowl – while also applauding Erika Kirk and Turning Point USA for staging an alternate halftime show this year.

While on The Will Cain Show on Fox News this week, Hunt criticized the selection of Bad Bunny while praising Charlie Kirk’s widow, Erika Kirk, for organizing the alternative programming:

“I really respect Erika for all that she’s done, especially with creating a halftime show for America… When my grandfather named the Super Bowl, he intended it to be something that children and families of all ages could come together and watch, and really believed that the game should come first.

That football is the attraction and that it didn’t need to compromise its character or rely on cheap appeal to draw an audience, especially when that approach can alienate so much of the fan base.

You know, the NFL honors women, the military, this country, celebrates communities, and so I think that whoever they select going forward for the halftime show needs to reflect those values more closely. So, I respect Erika.”

Hunt went on to say that she’d love to see Jason Aldean be the Super Bowl Halftime Show performer instead of Bad Bunny (she’s not the only one thinking that, as NFL legend Brett Favre said the same thing).

Wondering if the politics and outside noise that the Chiefs face could be a bit of reckless speculation on my part. I’d bet that the special teams coordinator is just feeling the heat of potentially missing the playoffs for the first time since 2014, and didn’t want to entertain a question about what the President thought of football.

That being said, that “I hope he hears it” at the end definitely felt a little pointed…
