Sean Payton’s coaching tree grew last offseason when the Denver Broncos staff was raided by other NFL teams, and the same thing could happen this winter since many are eyeing the men behind the team’s 9-2 record.
One man who’s had a positive impact in Broncos Country but may be a lesser-known name is Davis Webb. The team’s offensive pass game coordinator and quarterback coach, who was hired a few years ago. Now 30, the former third-round pick by the New York Giants in the 2017 NFL Draft. He later played for both the New York Jets and Buffalo Bills as well. He was eyeing coaching before even retiring.
He made one NFL start, going 23-of-40 for 168 yards and a touchdown in a Giants’ Week 18 loss in 2022. The tall quarterback also ran six times for 41 yards and a touchdown while playing in place of Daniel Jones, who was resting ahead of the playoffs.
Webb only played in one other game in his NFL career, coming in 2021. His last stop in college was at California, where he wrapped up a really solid career at that level. He played three seasons for Kliff Kingsbury at Texas Tech before losing his starting job to Patrick Mahomes. Then he transferred to Colorado. Before he played a game for the Buffaloes, Webb wound up at California, where he threw for 37 touchdowns under Sonny Dykes.
In Denver, as a coach, he’s already earned promotions and responsibilities, calling the Broncos’ plays during their second preseason game. That exhibition saw the second team put up 24 points in the first half against Arizona.
NFL Insider Tom Pelissero says, “Those who know Webb believe it’s a matter of when, not if, he becomes an NFL head coach. Even with Denver’s offense up and down, the Broncos are 9-2, and Webb’s first look could come this January.”
Webb may not be alone in leaving Denver for a bigger job this coming offseason. Defensive coordinator Vance Joseph will be one of the league’s hottest names as he hopes for a second chance at leading an NFL team.
The two would be following in the footsteps of now Raiders GM John Spytek, Jets GM Darren Mougey, Johnny Morton and David Shaw, who are on the Lions staff, Declan Doyle with the Bears and Chris Banjo also of the Jets.
