Atlanta enters this matchup still licking its wounds from a heartbreaking 30–27 overtime defeat to Carolina. The afternoon unraveled the moment Michael Penix Jr. went down with a season-ending knee injury. Kirk Cousins was thrown into action and couldn’t find a rhythm, completing just 6 of 14 passes for 48 yards. Bijan Robinson did everything in his power to keep Atlanta afloat, rumbling for 104 yards and a pair of scores, but the offense ran out of steam late.
Cousins will now get a full week of first-team reps before making the start. In limited snaps this season, he has connected on 61.5% of his throws, going 32-for-52 for 250 yards without a touchdown or turnover. He won’t be expected to play hero ball, Atlanta simply needs him to keep the ship steady and let the ground game, powered by Robinson and Tyler Allgeier, set the tone.
The Saints are coming off a bye week after grinding out a 17–7 win over Carolina, but that victory doesn’t mask the larger issues plaguing the team. New Orleans ranks near the bottom of the league in almost every offensive metric, posting just 297.2 yards per game (26th) and 15.5 points per outing (30th). Ball security has also been a sore spot, with 15 turnovers already on the books.
While Spencer Rattler opened the season under center, the franchise has now handed the reins to 26-year-old rookie Tyler Shough, the Louisville product. Shough has thrown for 586 yards, three touchdowns, two interceptions, and owns a 46.9 QBR. He’s flashed some promise, but consistency has been hard to come by for an offense still trying to find its identity.
