CHICAGO — Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Aaron Rodgers anticipates returning next week against the Buffalo Bills, head coach Mike Tomlin said.

Rodgers, who was ruled out last minute after being listed as questionable with a fractured left wrist, pushed to play against the Bears but was ruled out after Tomlin said he needed more practice time.

With a full week of practice, however, Tomlin sees Rodgers as playing against the Bills, which has turned into a near must-win game for the team.

“I anticipate him being ready for next week. It was a prudent decision to make. Certainly it wasn’t a fluid week for him, it was a fluid week for Mason in terms of reps, and so I think it’ll be in our rear view as we move forward. I’m hopeful of that,” Tomlin said.

That goes against what Tomlin said on Tuesday, which was that Rodgers would not need a full week of practice to end up playing. Either way, he did not end up suiting up and was not even the emergency third quarterback.

Rodgers was seen sporting the brace, which is something he has been fitted for this week. He also attempted shotgun and under center snaps as a way to get a gauge on how playing might feel.

The key indications for him to have played would be all about safety and functionality. Rodgers wants to be able to protect himself, but he also needs to be sure that he can function in the basics of the quarterback position.
