One former Washington Redskin was very disappointed in the Commanders’ performance on Sunday.
The Commanders‘ defense was non-existent as the Lions scored on their first eight possessions on their way to rolling Washington 44-22. Jon Jansen started 123 games, playing in 126 for Washington from 1999-2008 at right tackle. Jansen, having played in the trenches, watches the line of scrimmage closely and was not impressed with the Commanders’ defensive line at all.
Jansen was a guest on “BMitch and Finlay” on 106.7 The Fan on Monday. He didn’t hold back on what he saw (or didn’t see) from his former NFL team.
“Well, I think the thing I was most disappointed in was just the lack of discipline,” expressed Jansen. “And whether it is Daron Payne, and I understand frustrations, whether it’s him punching a guy in Amon-Ra- St. Brown…I just hate to watch a football game where there’s a lack of discipline, and then there’s a lack of physicality.”
“If you are going to lose at the line of scrimmage, and hey, I know everyone is beat up at this time of the year, but you can still go out and play a physical brand of football.”
This was not simply an NFL fan talking, taking shots at the Commanders. This is a former NFL lineman who played here in Washington for nine seasons. Janson simply expressed that the Commander’s defensive line didn’t put out, wasn’t disciplined, and wasn’t physical.
Then you add that Daron Payne punched an opponent and essentially sealed his place in the locker room, deserting his teammates for the rest of the game. This is a very bad look for the Commanders. Though Dan Quinn is going to take over the play calls for the defense, is Jansen saying, perhaps the effort and lack of discipline, enthusiasm and commitment to compete, might suggest this team (or many on this team) has already lost the will to compete for Dan Quinn?
