The Arizona Cardinals lost another heartbreaker on Sunday afternoon to the Jacksonville Jaguars.
It was the Cardinals’ eighth one-possession game this season, and their sixth one-possession loss. Despite being right there in all but two games in 2025, Arizona now sits at 3-8 with six games remaining and has lost three straight games.
Where Do Jonathan Gannon And the Cardinals Go Now?
It’s been a rough season, to say the least, for the Cardinals, coach Jonathan Gannon, and the fanbase.
Every close loss just takes another toll on everyone involved, and it gets harder and harder to get back up. However, Gannon has never lost confidence in his group’s ability to get back up.
“A couple plays away from winning that game. Love the fight, love the resilience. Thought we did some good things,” Gannon said. “That’s a good football team, give them credit. Ultimately, didn’t do enough in all three phases to win the game.”
But that’s been the Cardinals’ story all season long. Arizona has had the lead in the fourth quarter in eight of its 11 games. The problem has been finishing them, and that remained the problem on Sunday.
“There’s no silver lining in losing,” Gannon said. “But this team will come back tomorrow and get ready to go, and we’ll learn from it, move on and get to Tampa.”
Throughout the last few weeks, as the Cardinals have lost some rough games, Gannon has consistently taken the blame for the team’s performance and lack of execution.
However, each time, he’s remained confident that his locker room will be ready to get back to work. The Cardinals’ season has gone off the rails, but the head coach hasn’t seemed to lose the locker room.
Despite loss after loss, the Cardinals still find a way to come out on Sunday and play a close, hard-fought game. Now, the Seattle Seahawks and San Francisco 49ers games are outliers, but Arizona even showed fight to come back a little bit in those games.
But regardless of the outcome this season, the players in the locker room haven’t lacked anything in the effort department, and Gannon talked on that testament after Sunday’s loss.
“We’ve got the right people in there. They’re team over you, so they know what that means; they’ll come to work ready to go,” Gannon said. “There’s no quit in that group. There’s no lack of fight. There’s no pointing fingers. They’re high football character guys that love to play football. When you have that, they will respond the right way.
“What I told them in there is, ‘It comes down to a couple plays here and there, like a lot of games have, and we got to do more in the week and then more on game day.’”
The Cardinals have to put a complete game together to be able to win. Arizona has thrown for more than 450 yards and lost, and forced four turnovers and lost.
There have been sparks of good football on both sides of the ball, but the Cardinals haven’t been able to put it all together.
Arizona’s offense is ranked No. 20 in the NFL, and its defense is ranked No. 22, according to PFSN’s Offense and Defense Impact. With the loss on Sunday, the Cardinals fell to 3-8, and their projected win total now sits at just 5.5 games.
