The Seattle Seahawks’ offseason featured a lot of change at high-profile positions. Most notably, the Seahawks made several big changes on offense.

They moved on from starting quarterback Geno Smith and handed the reins of their offense to Sam Darnold, traded standout wide receiver DK Metcalf to Pittsburgh and replaced him with Yakima native Cooper Kupp, and turned to Klint Kubiak to replace former offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb.
Those changes on the offensive side of the ball received much of the attention during the offseason, but one of their somewhat surprising moves at a high-profile defensive position is currently standing out to Seattle Sports’ Brock and Salk as one of the best they made.
Seattle signed veteran edge rusher DeMarcus Lawrence to a three-year contract in March, reuniting him with his former defensive line coach, Aden Durde, who is the Seahawks’ defensive coordinator.
There were some questions as to how much the four-time Pro Bowler nicknamed “Tank” had left in his tank. Lawrence was coming off a season in which he played just four games for the Dallas Cowboys due to a Lisfranc (foot) injury, and he was entering his age-33 season.
The Boise State product is proving there is still plenty left. He’s totaled eight tackles for loss and four sacks in 10 games. He’s also tied for second on the team with eight quarterback hits and third with 37 pressures, per Pro Football Focus. In a Week 10 win against the Cardinals, he returned two fumbles for touchdowns on his way to NFC Defensive Player of the Week honors.
Brock and Salk discussed how Lawrence has surprised them with the impact he’s made for the Seahawks on Monday.
“The more I watch the team, the more impressed I am with DeMarcus Lawrence,” Mike Salk said. “… He has been so much better than I thought he would be.”
Huard agreed.
“I had no idea that he had this much left in the tank physically,” said former NFL quarterback Brock Huard, who recalled the type of impact Lawrence made when playing against the Seahawks in the past.
“That game, remember, a couple of years ago down in Dallas, he kind of wrecked some of the big situations like a third down and a fourth down and got after Geno (Smith). You’ve played against him and you’ve seen those unbelievably go-go gadget arms that are also just jacked beyond belief and you’re like, man, that guy is a monster. But he had just been so beat up the last couple of years, and I think beat up physically, beat up mentally, beat up in that culture and that chaos of Dallas – and this is just been a breath of fresh air (reuniting) with Aden Durde.”

Lawrence has started all 10 games that he’s played this season and been on the field for more than 60% of the team’s defensive snaps in seven. Brock and Salk thought he would be more in line for a part-time role with modest contributions.
“He’d be a good pro, he wouldn’t be available every game, he’d flash, he’d make some big plays, but he wouldn’t be like an alpha with Leonard (Williams) – and he has been. He’s been phenomenal,” Huard said.
Brock and Salk put Lawrence in a grouping with defensive tackle Bryon Murphy II, linebacker Ernest Jones IV and cornerback Devon Witherspoon as candidates for the second-best player on Seattle’s defense behind Williams this season. Salk was ready to got a little further than that.
“Everybody’s been good, but I think the second-best defensive player on the team this year has been DeMarcus Lawrence,” Salk said.
