Jim Mora is sailing for greener pastures.
After multiple successful seasons as UConn’s head coach, Mora is leaving the school that he has called home since 2022 to become Colorado State’s head coach, ESPN first reported.
Mora led the Huskies to back-to-back nine-win seasons for the first time in program history, including a victory over North Carolina in the Fenway Bowl last season.

UConn is bowl-bound again this year with its 9-3 record, but will have offensive coordinator Gordon Sammis serving as the interim head coach for the contest.
Mora is taking the Colorado State job just as the Rams join the new-look Pac 12 conference.
“We are grateful for Coach Mora’s contributions to UConn over the past four seasons,” UConn athletic director David Benedict said in a statement. “He took on the challenge of rebuilding our football program and delivered results that exceeded expectations … Coach Mora brought energy and a winning culture back to UConn football and put our program back on the national stage.
“We now turn our attention to finding the right leader to build on the foundation that has been established and continue moving Conn football forward.”
Benedict added that a national search for the next head coach would “begin immediately.”
A former NFL head coach for the Falcons and Seahawks, Mora was also the head coach at UCLA from 2012-’17.
UConn’s three losses this season — to Syracuse, Delaware, and Rice — all came in overtime, and the season was highlighted with an upset home victory over Duke.
Mora, 64, had previously said earlier this month that he wasn’t “a mover” and wouldn’t chase another job.

While Colorado State isn’t exactly a college football blue blood, it is part of a conference and some some have speculated that UConn being one of two independent teams in the country — along with Notre Dame — played a factor in Mora’s decision.
Mora previously showed interest in the Washington State head coaching job after the 2024 season, which he eventually rebuffed in favor of staying in Storrs.
He later accused Washington State of tampering with his players in the wild west that is the college football transfer portal.

“A simple note to the schools and coaches that have blatantly broken @NCAAFootball rules by tampering with our players in the last 24 hours,” Mora said on X in December 2024. “We do know who you are, we will pursue all avenues to hold you accountable. We are excited that we’ve built a program where coaches have to cheat to beat us … Think hard before you tamper with our players.”
Mora’s departure to Colorado State should be a boon for the Rams, who fired Jay Norvell after a 2-5 start as they look to make several splashes in the recruiting world with an established coach leading the charge.
