While Calvin Anderson replaced Jones last Sunday after he exited the game with a neck injury, Tomlin said in his Tuesday press conference that Peat would be in the mix to start. Practice video from Wednesday showed Peat taking snaps at left tackle, and now it’s official that he will start in place of Jones.

Peat has played 1,959 career snaps at left tackle and has played the position full-time more recently than Anderson. In 2023, Peat almost exclusively played left tackle in his final season with the New Orleans Saints, as he logged 715 snaps at the position. The decision also allows the Steelers to keep Anderson as their swing tackle.

Peat has started one game for the Steelers this season, getting the nod at left guard in place of the injured Isaac Seumalo in Week 10 against the Los Angeles Chargers as the Steelers opened the game in their jumbo package. However, Spencer Anderson took the majority of left guard snaps in that game with Peat only playing eight of them against in the Chargers.

Peat has been mostly a gameday inactive for the Steelers this season, as the team has used Calvin Anderson as its swing tackle and Spencer Anderson as its jumbo package and backup guard. But Peat has plenty of experience and pedigree. He was a first-round pick in the 2015 NFL Draft and was a Pro Bowler for three consecutive seasons with the Saints from 2018-2020.

While his only game action with the Steelers came in the Week 10 game against Los Angeles, he’s drawn praise from Tomlin and offensive coordinator Arthur Smith. He’ll have a big test going up against the Bills and EDGE Joey Bosa, whom he will likely see for the majority of the game.

Given that Peat only has 80 career snaps at right tackle, 78 of which came in his rookie season, it makes sense that the Steelers may feel more comfortable with Calvin Anderson at swing tackle while they start Peat. The team clearly liked what it saw from him in practice this week, and the 11th-year veteran has his first real opportunity as a Steeler.
