For the first time since 2010, Texas football welcomes Lone Star Showdown rival Texas A&M to Royal-Memorial Stadium in Austin.

The stakes couldn’t be much higher in a series that began in 1894 but took a 12-year hiatus beginning in 2012 after Texas A&M left the Big 12 Conference and joined the SEC. It’s a defensive battle early between the No. 16 Longhorns (8-3, 5-2 SEC) and the No. 3 Aggies (11-0, 7-0); Texas has 41 yards on 18 plays while the Aggies have 84 yards on 17 plays through the first quarter.

After a month of fireworks from quarterback Arch Manning and the Texas offense, the Longhorns have become bogged down by a tough Aggie defense. Manning has 51 yards on 8-of-21 passing, and he’s not getting much help from his receivers. Overall, Texas has 112 yards on 36 snaps. A&M quarterback Marcel Reed has been much more effective with 94 yards passing and a game-high 45 yards rushing. Texas coach Steve Sarkisian, who’s earned his reputation as an offensive wiz, has some work to do during the break.

After his 30-yard punt return, KC Concepcion finishes the drive off with an 8-yard touchdown run on a jet sweep. Texas safety Michael Taaffe had a shot at a tackle for no gain, but Concepcion slipped through his hands.

KC Concepcion returns a punt 30 yards, but Ethan Burke saves perhaps a touchdown by dragging him down at midfield. Burke may be the best Longhorn on the field so far. But the Aggies are in the red zone.

Good news for the Texas defense: CB Malik Muhammad and LB Trey Moore both are back in the game after leaving earlier with injuries. Bad news for the Longhorns: The Aggies drive 62 yards and tie the game on a 31-yard field goal from Jared Zirkel.

Mason Shipley drills a 41-yard field goal for Texas, which isn’t easy on a gusty night. A&M had its field-goal try blocked from almost the same spot, and Texas converted. That’s the difference in the game.

Texas quarterback Arch Manning has only completed four of his 12 passes for 21 yards, but he’s starting to use his feet to pick up some yards and first downs. The Longhorns have the ball at their own 37 when the second quarter starts.

Lots going on during the first sustained drive of the game. A&M gets to the Texas 15 yard line, but injuries are now the story of the game. Texas CB Malik Muhammad left the game and hasn’t returned, and Aggie quarterback Marcel Reed looked like he turned an ankle and limps off. The Aggies have to settle for a 35-yard FG attempt by Jared Zirkel, and it’s blocked by Ethan Burke.

Through three drives, Texas has 24 yards on 13 carries – and no pass-inteference calls against the Aggies, much to the chagrin of this crowd. Arch Manning is 3-for-9 for 19 yards.

All the emotions, and back-to-back punts. Both defenses have stepped up early. Advantage, Texas, after a 58-yard punt by Jack Bouwmeester pinned the Aggies inside their own 10 and the A&M’s Tyler White only managed a 39-yard punt.

Texas linebacker Anthony Hill Jr. is not suited up as Texas goes through pregame warm-ups and will presumably miss the game against Texas A&M. Hill is the Longhorns’ leading tackler with 69 stops despite missing last week’s game against Arkansas. With the junior sidelined with an injured hand suffered Nov. 15 against Georgia, Texas struggled to contain the Razorbacks’ offense. Arkansas rushed for 188 yards, averaging 6.1 yards per attempt in the most efficient rushing performance allowed by the Longhorn defense in three seasons.
