SAN ANTONIO — A spot in the Class 6A Division II regional finals is on the line Friday when Vandegrift and San Marcos meet in the Texas high school football playoffs at the Alamodome.
Two of 10 Central Texas teams left in the postseason, both squads impressed all year.

Vandegrift (10-2) won District 25-6A, then edged state runner-up Westlake 16-14 in the bidistrict round before routing San Antonio Brandeis 37-7 last week. The Vipers look for their third regional final appearance in the last four years.
San Marcos (8-4) was second in District 29-6A. It won both of its playoff games by blowout, defeating Eagle Pass 42-10 and Edinburg 33-3. This marks the first time the Rattlers are in the third round of the playoffs since 2006.

In what is probably the nail in the coffin for San Marcos, Vandegrift’s Brady Srncik makes an interception and returns it 26 yards to the Rattlers 49. The Vipers are minutes away from a rematch from Week 1 with Dripping Springs in the regional final.
Vandegrift answers with a 75-yard scoring drive where it didn’t attempt a pass, with Evan Williamson crossing the goal line on a 20-yard run. The Vipers go up by three scores and have almost assured themselves of a third regional finals appearance in the last four years.

The Rattlers get on the board thanks to a phenomenal 42-yard touchdown catch by Elliott Gray. In between two defenders in the end zone, Gray spun in the air to make the reception on a ball thrown by Frans Steyn. After doing almost nothing in the first half, the San Marcos offense has shown life after the break.
Neither team scores in the third quarter as both defenses continue to impress. San Marcos drove into Vandegrift territory for the first time, but penalties backed the Rattler up near midfield and they had to punt. Vandegrift, which turned the ball over twice in the quarter, has the ball at its own 31 with a second-and-16 to start the fourth quarter.

San Marcos’ defense is keeping it in the game. After a Vandegrift offensive lineman catches a batted pass, the Rattlers force a fumble and take over at their 36.

The Vipers have been suffocating on defense, holding San Marcos to 17 total yards. Playing in a dome may be throwing off the Rattlers, who have eight false-start penalties and 50 yards in total penalties.
Brock Chilton has five catches for 69 yards and a touchdown, most of which came on a 57-yard scoring strike from Teodecki. Vandegrift has 141 total yards.
