The quarterback situation in the NFC West became a little more solidified. On Friday afternoon it was announced the Seattle Seahawks‘ arch rivals, the San Francisco 49ers, signed quarterback Brock Purdy to a massive extension. The final pick in the 2022 NFL draft – Mr. Irrelevant – is now among the highest paid in the league at his position.

Purdy is inked to the Niners for the next five years with a contract worth up to $265 million dollars.

In sports and business, it’s not wise to make the move your top rivals want you to make. I know there were more than a few 12’s out there (as well as Rams and Cardinals fans) who were hoping San Francisco would commit an unreasonable amount of money to Purdy. While he has been decent, Purdy has benefitted tremendously from a stacked roster around him due to the fact the Niners were comparatively paying him next to nothing. Personally, I am a little surprised San Francisco decided to commit big money to Purdy when they could have let him play it out with a lesser roster, to see if he really is the answer at quarterback.

Instead, they’re financially tied (hamstrung?) to Purdy for the foreseeable future. The Seahawks’ gamble with Sam Darnold feels insignificant to how much San Francisco is putting on the line for “Mr. Irrelevant.”
