Joe Theismann explains how roughing the passer calls have changed
Former QB Joe Theismann weighs in on today’s NFL and how roughing calls have changed over the years.
The 2024 NFL Draft class produced a record-tying six quarterbacks selected in the first round. That included the No. 2 overall pick Jayden Daniels to the Washington Commanders. The final quarterback taken in the first round was Bo Nix at No. 12 overall to the Denver Broncos.
Each of those passers led their respective teams to the playoffs as rookies last season. Nix’s Broncos were eliminated in the wild-card round but Daniels led the Commanders on an improbable run to the NFC championship game.
In 2025, one of these teams has excelled while the other’s disappointed following a surprisingly successful campaign.
Nix and the Broncos, powered by their ferocious defense, are well in the hunt for the No. 1 seed in the AFC playoffs. Thanks to the Kansas City Chiefs‘ loss on Thanksgiving and their win over the Chiefs in Week 11, Denver has a four-game lead over the reigning conference champions. They’re two games up on the Los Angeles Chargers in the division race.
Washington, by contrast, has regressed as injuries have hit their team hard, including Daniels. He’s missed half of their games this year, as the team has dropped its last six games in a row, most recently to the Miami Dolphins in Madrid in Week 11. Daniels will be out for this contest and the team turns to veteran Marcus Mariota for the start again.
Denver heads east for this inter-conference contest in prime time. Here’s what to know about “Sunday Night Football” in Week 13.
