Jets vs. Falcons: The matchup
Ready or not, it’s Kirk Cousins Time in Atlanta for the remainder of the season after the season-ending knee injury suffered by starter Michael Penix Jr. in the team’s Week 11 loss to the Carolina Panthers (30-27 in OT). Cousins completed 16 of 23 passes for 199 yards with two touchdowns, one interception and a 107.0 passer rating as the Falcons snapped a five-game losing streak last week with a 24-10 win over the Saints in New Orleans. The Falcons are now 5.5-point favorites to win a second straight road game on Sunday against the Jets.
Doubling their season win count isn’t out of the question as the Jets seek to salvage what’s left of a campaign that began with dysfunction on offense and seven straight losses. Back-to-back wins over the Cincinnati Bengals (39-38) and Cleveland Browns (27-20) in Weeks 8 and 10, respectively, provided a spark that was expectedly dimmed in road losses to the New England Patriots (27-14) and Baltimore Ravens (23-10) over the past two weeks. Not only that, but the Jets dealt away lockdown corner Sauce Gardner and top defensive lineman Quinnen Williams at the trade deadline in the name of rebuilding, leaving first-year coach Aaron Glenn with a skeleton crew to try and steal back a little optimism down the stretch.
