Buccaneers vs. Cardinals: The matchup

Mayfield and the Bucs hobble into Week 13 with three straight losses to playoff teams in the New England Patriots (28-23), Buffalo Bills (44-32) and Los Angeles Rams (34-7) and with Mayfield (shoulder) battered, but expected to start. The Buccaneers surged to a 5-1 start and was the talk of the NFL early in the season, but has since run into formidable opposition and seen their lead slip to a half-game over the Carolina Panthers with a 6-5 overall mark going into Sunday. Last week’s loss to the Rams marked a new low point, as Mayfield struggled to a 9-of-19 showing for just 41 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions before exiting with an injury to his non-throwing shoulder.

The Cardinals continue to lean on veteran backup quarterback Jacoby Brissett with starter Kyler Murray still on the mend from a foot injury that pushed him to Injured Reserve on Nov. 5. Arizona also enters the weekend on a three-game losing streak and with losses eight of its past nine games while an injury-marred season slips away from them. Still, there’s hope that fortunes could change as the Cardinals continue to play tight games with a Week 9 road win over the Dallas Cowboys to their credit (27-17) and six of their eight losses coming by four points or less. That includes a 27-24 overtime loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 12 that was won on a 52-yard field by Cam Little.
