A busy Week 13 that saw another shift in the AFC North standings has set up a pivotal Week 14 showdown between the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Baltimore Ravens.
Baltimore took control of the AFC North coming out of Week 12 thanks to a win over the New York Jets and a Steelers loss to the Chicago Bears. But that seemingly was only going to last for a week as the Ravens then lost on Thanksgiving night to the Cincinnati Bengals in quarterback Joe Burrow’s return, giving Pittsburgh an opening once again.
But the Steelers squandered the opportunity, getting blown out at home by the Buffalo Bills, handing control of the division right back to the Ravens after a 26-7 loss. The Ravens hold the advantage again in the division due to the common-games tiebreaker.
Elsewhere in the AFC North, the Cleveland Browns took on the San Francisco 49ers in rookie quarterback Shedeur Sanders’ second career start, and though the Browns showed promise in the first half offensively, they weren’t able to overcome a tough 49ers team.
Here’s the updated AFC North standings post-Week 13.
AFC NORTH STANDINGS THROUGH WEEK 13
1. Baltimore Ravens: 6-6
2.Pittsburgh Steelers: 6-6
3. Cincinnati Bengals: 4-8
4. Cleveland Browns: 3-9
The Bengals win was a real gift for the Steelers, who watched the Bengals upset the Ravens on Thanksgiving night. In his return from injury, Burrow threw for 261 yards and two touchdowns, making some big-time throws on the night, keeping Cincinnati’s slim playoff hopes alive.
Meanwhile, outside of a Derrick Henry 28-yard rushing touchdown, the Ravens’ offense, led by perennial MVP candidate Lamar Jackson, didn’t look good again. And their defense had no real answer for the Burrow-led Bengals attack as a frustrating season continues under John Harbaugh.
The Steelers didn’t take advantage of the gift though, coming out flat and rolling over in the second half against the Bills. They allowed the most rushing yards to an opponent at Heinz Field/Acrisure Stadium, leading boos and chants of “Fire Tomlin!” to rain down on the North Shore.
Things aren’t going well in the Steel City.
Meanwhile, elsewhere in the AFC North, the Browns rolled out Sanders for his second NFL start, and he delivered early in his second start.
After the 49ers took an early lead on a Christian McCaffrey rushing touchdown, Sanders led the Browns on a scoring drive, hooking up with fellow rookie tight end Harold Fannin for a 34-yard touchdown, giving him a passing touchdown in his second straight game.
The 49ers answered the touchdown with a field goal to take a 10-8 lead into halftime, thanks to a 33-yard strike from Brock Purdy to George Kittle, setting up a 25-yard Matt Gay field goal.
Coming out of the half, the Browns and 49ers traded punts before the 49ers extended their lead, thanks to a Purdy rushing touchdown. Yes, you read that right.
The San Francisco scoring drive was aided by a 14-yard strike from Purdy to Kittle, helping set up his rushing touchdown.
Things unraveled for the Browns after that. Cleveland fumbled a direct snap to Fannin on 4th and 1, and later punt returner Gage Larvadain muffed a punt, giving San Francisco great field position again.
The 49ers put the game away as Purdy hit wide receiver Jauan Jennings for a 7-yard touchdown, making it a 23-8 game after a failed 2-point conversion.
Ultimately, the Browns fell 26-8 as the 49ers added a late field goal. In the loss, Sanders completed 16-of-25 passes for 168 yards and one touchdown. Meanwhile Myles Garrett had one sack in the game, giving him 19.0 on the season as he continues to trek closer and closer toward breaking the NFL’s single-season sacks record.
The Browns will take on the Tennessee Titans in Week 14 in a matchup of two of the worst teams in football. Elsewhere in the AFC North, the Steelers and Ravens will play each other in Week 14, while the Bengals will travel to Buffalo to take on the Bills.
