Justin Herbert broke his left (non-throwing) hand during a win over the Raiders Sunday and may miss the Chargers’ game against the Eagles a week from Monday.
Coach John Harbaugh told reporters after the Chargers’ 31-14 win at So-Fi Stadium in Inglewood, Calif., Sunday that Herbert will need a “medical procedure” to repair his hand.
Herbert’s 123.2 career passer rating against the Eagles is highest ever among quarterbacks who’ve thrown at least 35 passes.
Harbaugh would not speculate whether Herbert would be available for the Eagles-Chargers Monday night game back at So-Fi.
According to Hayley Elwood of KTLA in Los Angeles, Herbert told reporters: “I’m treating it as if I’m playing on Monday.”
The Chargers’ backup is Trey Lance, who followed Carson Wentz at North Dakota State.
Herbert got hurt in the first quarter and briefly left the game but returned for good in the second quarter.
He went 15-for-20 for 151 yards with two touchdowns and one interception, which happened six plays after he returned. Lance threw just one pass, a nine-yard completion.
Lance, drafted third overall by the 49ers in 2021, was traded to the Cowboys just before the 2023 season and signed as a free agent with the Chargers this past April.
He’s 2-3 in five career starts – four with the 49ers, one with the Cowboys – and has five career touchdown passes and four interceptions. He’s completed 56 percent of his passes and has a career passer rating of 79.6, which ranks 59th of 79 active quarterbacks who’ve thrown at least 100 passes.

In his one career start against the Eagles, in 2021, Herbert completed 32 of 38 passes (84 percent) for 356 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions in a 27-24 win at the Linc. He remains the only quarterback ever to throw for 350 yards against the Eagles and complete 84 percent of his passes in a game.
In his six-year career, Herbert is 48-42 in the regular season but 0-2 in the postseason.
This year, Hebert has completed 67 percent of his passes with 21 TDs, 10 INTs and a 94.9 passer rating.
