Former QB Joe Theismann weighs in on today’s NFL and how roughing calls have changed over the years.
February 2012 featured the peak of songs like Gotye’s “Somebody That I Used to Know” and building anticipation for the first Avengers movie from Marvel Studios.
There was also the second Super Bowl showdown between the New England Patriots and New York Giants of the last five years. Once again, Patriots icon Tom Brady couldn’t overcome Eli Manning’s Giants as New York earned a second championship with Manning at quarterback.
More than 13 years on, both teams have undergone (or are still undergoing) transitions to return to those glory days. New England’s risen to the top of the AFC East after years of dominance by the Buffalo Bills. Second-year quarterback Drake Maye is an MVP contender with one of the top run defenses in the league on the other side and a Pro Bowl caliber cornerback in Christian Gonzalez.
On the other side of the rebuild spectrum, the Giants are 2-10 after their sixth consecutive loss – an overtime defeat to the Detroit Lions. New York’s heading for another top-10 draft pick and a change at head coach ahead of next season. After coming close against contenders like Detroit, Green Bay and Chicago in recent weeks, they’re looking for their third win of the season with rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart back in the lineup.
