Justin Herbert was forced to exit the first quarter of Sunday’s game between the Los Angeles Chargers and the Las Vegas Raiders after suffering a fractured left hand. The Pro Bowl quarterback was initially assessed questionable to return but later checked back in.
The Chargers secured a convincing 31-14 win over a Raiders side that dropped to 2-10 after its sixth straight defeat. L.A., on the other hand, improved to 8-4.

Herbert finished the game with 15-of-20 completed passes for 151 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. The Chargers announced after the game that Herbert would need surgery to address the injury, and the 27-year-old underwent the procedure on Monday.

Herbert is in the midst of another big year for the Chargers. He’s played in all 12 of L.A.’s games thus far, registering 265-of-396 completed passes for 2,842 yards and 21 touchdowns. The former Oregon Ducks star also has 57 carries for 353 yards and one rushing TD.

Herbert’s incredible run hit a major bump on the road on Sunday, though. He fractured his hand against the Raiders, although the silver lining is that the injury was on his non-throwing hand.
Herbert went under the knife on Monday, and the Chargers made an important announcement following the surgery. According to the team, the procedure was successful, and Herbert still has a chance to suit up in their next game.
“Justin Herbert underwent successful surgery today in Los Angeles to stabilize a fracture in his left hand.

“Herbert’s return to play is considered day-to-day, and his status for next Monday’s game against Philadelphia will be determined later in the week,” the Chargers posted on X.
As the post indicates, the Chargers are set to battle the defending champions, the 8-4 Philadelphia Eagles, in a “Monday Night Football” showdown for Week 14. Despite having to undergo mid-season surgery, Herbert has not been ruled out for that one.
The Chargers are currently second in the AFC West behind the 10-2 Denver Broncos, who are riding a nine-game winning streak. L.A. is fifth in the AFC with five games remaining in the regular season.
