Sony took over as the NFL’s headset partner this season, following a partnership announced last year. Now, Sony is taking its NFL partnership a step further, releasing a line of team-branded WH-1000XM5 headphones.

The collection is kicking off with a Detroit Lions edition, featuring the team’s logo on the earcup and the XM5 headphones in a silver colorway. The Detroit Lions headphones are out today on Sony’s website. They retail for $400, with an initial flash sale price of $330.

The Detroit Lions edition drops Dec. 2.

Following today’s release of the XM5 Lions edition, Sony will follow up with a Buffalo Bills edition on Dec. 8 and a Houston Texans edition on Dec. 11. Each headphone features the team’s logo on the silver XM5 colorway.

Interestingly, Sony opted to release an NFL-branded edition of the XM5 headphones, rather than the latest XM6 headphones, which it released this year.

As for the coach’s headsets, Sony used noise-canceling technology from its 1000X series headphones and fine-tuned it for the demands of football. The headsets’ microphones are tuned to isolate the coach’s voice from the noise of the crowd, and Sony says they tested the headphones with real crowd noises of over 100 decibels to optimize noise-canceling performance.

The coach headsets feature prominent Sony branding on the microphone, earcup, and headband. The new headsets are available to coaches with either one or two earcups, and the headsets are used by all 32 teams in the League. Sony replaced its rival Bose, which previously was the headset partner of the NFL for eight years; their partnership ended in 2022.

The new NFL-edition headphones are just the latest crossover between the worlds of sports and audio; in November, Bowers & Wilkins unveiled a McLaren-branded edition of its Px8 S2 headphones, following its partnership with the manufacturer’s F1 team.

As for the Lions, they’ll host the Cowboys on Nov. 4, with the game streaming on Prime Video.
