Blake Grupe is getting a second chance.
The former New Orleans Saints kicker signed to the Indianapolis Colts’ practice squad, the NFL Network reported. Grupe reportedly impressed in a workout and Indianapolis needed a new kicker after waiving Michael Badgley.Â
Grupe landed another job just a week after the Saints cut him. New Orleans released Grupe after he missed two costly kicks in a loss to the Atlanta Falcons. It was the latest misstep for Grupe, who struggled all season and missed a season-high eight field goal attempts. Grupe is 18 of 26 on the year.
The Saints replaced Grupe with Charlie Smyth, the Ireland native who resided on their practice squad and beat out Cade York to kick in Sunday’s loss to the Miami Dolphins. Smyth had a notable debut, making a 56-yard field goal and attempting an onside kick that New Orleans recovered.Â
With the Colts, however, Grupe gets to join a team in the playoff hunt. The Colts have led the AFC South for most of the season, but back-to-back losses have put them in a tie with the Jacksonville Jaguars.Â
Grupe spent three total seasons with the Saints, beating out Wil Lutz for the job in 2023.Â
