SEATTLE — Lumen Field, the home of the Seattle Seahawks, has achieved the prestigious TRUE Gold Certification for zero-waste sustainability programs, becoming only the second NFL venue to earn this distinction.

The certification was presented by Bryce Gerritsen, regional director of the U.S. Green Building Council, to Zach Hensley, Seahawks vice president of operations and general manager of Lumen Field, and Christy Briggs, Lumen Field sustainability manager, during the Seahawks vs. Vikings game on Nov. 30.

The TRUE Gold Certification, administered by Green Business Certification Inc. (GBCI), recognizes leadership in sustainable resource management and waste reduction.

“Being a global leader in sustainable practices continues to be one of Lumen Field’s top operational priorities,” said Hensley. “We are thrilled to demonstrate our continued commitment to the environment and being a zero-waste venue through this achievement.”

To earn the certification, Lumen Field tracked and demonstrated sustainable practices over a one-year period, achieving a 93% waste diversion rate by diverting more than 6 million pounds of waste from landfills.

The introduction of MRFi sorting technology in 2022 significantly improved waste sorting efficiency, reducing the time required from five days to 36 hours.

This is a remarkable improvement from 2006, when the facility recorded a diversion rate of only 4.66%.

Peter Templeton, president and CEO of the U.S. Green Building Council and GBCI, praised the achievement, stating, “Lumen Field is only the second NFL venue to achieve TRUE certification, setting an example for stadiums worldwide to create positive environmental, health, and economic outcomes. Attaining a 93% waste diversion rate while reducing waste sorting time by 70% is a true sign of the team’s commitment and leadership.”

In recognition of their sustainability efforts, the Seahawks and Lumen Field have also received the 2024 Green Sports Alliance Energy Player Award and the 2025 Green Sports Alliance Waste Champion Award. Operated by First & Goal Inc., Lumen Field hosts more than 300 event days per year, attracting over 2 million attendees annually.

The venue is set to host six international soccer matches during the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
