After a mutual parting of ways with the Pittsburgh Steelers, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that Darius Slay wanted to continue playing.

Ideally, the veteran cornerback may have hoped to clear waivers and pick his next spot, but Slay can’t be too upset after being claimed by the Buffalo Bills.

At 8-4, Buffalo is in a prime position to claim a playoff spot in the conference. They also have Josh Allen, a quarterback that Slay previously referred to as “amazing.” Slay’s comments on Allen came back in November of 2023 after Slay and the Philadelphia Eagles defeated the Bills 37-34 in overtime.

“Josh Allen is doing an amazing job, man,” Slay said following the game. “We were doing great on the back end covering but extending plays, throwing the ball, making plays, running the ball, he was doing his thing today.”

In addition to praising his play, Slay also defended Allen regarding turnovers.

“I don’t know why a lot of media are giving him bad talk because of turnovers,” Slay said. “You can see he threw the ball 51 times, you know what I’m saying. I don’t know a guy who can throw it 51 times … per game and not turn the ball over. I know you want to take care of it, but if you’re throwing the ball 51 times, you’re going to throw an interception … it’s just going to happen.”

Allen threw one interception in the matchup, but he almost carried the team singlehandedly to the win. He completed 29-of-51 passes for 339 yards and two touchdowns while also running the ball nine times for 81 yards and two scores.

Slay joined the Steelers in the offseason on a one-year deal. The move did not work out for either side as Slay has dealt with injuries this season while also struggling on the field. Using Pro Football Focus’ metrics, Slay ranks at No. 50 among 70 eligible cornerbacks.

Despite his poor play this season, Slay is not far removed from an excellent 2024 campaign. Last season in Philadelphia, Slay had career-bests in completion percentage, yards allowed, yards per attempt and more.

Slay is expected to serve as depth behind Christian Benford, Tre’Davious White and Max Hairston, so the addition comes as a low-risk signing. If the Bills can help Slay return to 2024 form, he could end up being a steal down the homestretch of the season for Buffalo.
