Jacksonville Jaguars’ Liam Coen talks 10-game win streak vs. Colts
The Jaguars haven’t lost to the Colts at home since the 2014 season. Still, Jaguars head coach Liam Coen explained the team isn’t concerned with that.
The Jacksonville Jaguars have defeated the Indianapolis Colts at home every year since 2015.Jaguars head coach Liam Coen says the team is not focused on the past winning streak. Both the Jaguars and Colts are 8-4 and competing to win the AFC South.
It’s a new year, and the Jacksonville Jaguars aren’t thinking about the past when it comes to facing off against the Indianapolis Colts this week.
Jacksonville has defeated Indianapolis at home every year since the 2015 season. Regardless of whether it was Gus Bradley, Doug Marrone, Darrell Bevell (interim) or Doug Pederson as the team’s head coach, the Jaguars have won.
It didn’t matter if the “home” game was in Jacksonville or London (2016), either. The Jaguars took care of business, defeating Indianapolis 30-27.
When the Colts come into town this weekend to play the Jaguars, many at home will notice the streak talk, and players will probably be asked about it throughout the week. None will be able to explain the inexplicable.
There’s no rhyme or reason. The rosters, coaching staff and top personnel have changed multiple times throughout the decade. Still, Jacksonville has won.
But this year, the team isn’t thinking about that. Jaguars head coach Liam Coen made that clear Wednesday morning. They’ll have to beat this year’s Colts team, not the one from 2015, 2024 or any other that came in between.
“The message to the team today was, I’m sure you’re going to ask them the same question, and every year is a new year. Every team is a new team and I think we understand that we’re different, right? Everything’s new and different, and every year is different,” Coen said.
The Jaguars are 8-4 and in the driver’s seat to win the AFC South. The Colts are also 8-4 and in the driver’s seat to win the AFC South. They control their own destinies and they have reached this point in their respective seasons for different reasons.
The Colts are on a tear thanks to MVP candidate, running back Jonathan Taylor and the resurgence of quarterback Daniel Jones.
Jacksonville has won a few games in a row, thanks in large part to its physicality and resilience in overcoming injuries and obstacles. Various things could have been said in past seasons as to how each team got to where they were. For reference, the first year of the streak included players like quarterback Blake Bortles and running back T.J. Yeldon.
Trevor Lawrence and Travis Etienne now man those positions.
Cornerback Nick Marshall donned No. 41; now it’s defensive end Josh Hines-Allen.
“I think you can hold onto that as something in your back pocket as a player, but ultimately, we got to go beat the Colts: this year’s Colts and this team on Sunday. Hopefully, our crowd and fanbase is a big part of that,” Coen added.
The Jaguars’ head coach said he won’t mention the streak to the players ahead of the game. It isn’t something that he and his staff are focused on.
“I hope our players are not thinking about that, either,” he said.
Sunday’s game will mark the second of four divisional games Jacksonville has left. They’ll face the Colts again in a few weeks on the road before finishing the season at home against the Titans in Week 18.
Jaguars swap players on practice squad, active roster
On Wednesday, the Jaguars signed defensive lineman Matt Dickerson to the active roster from the practice squad. They also signed receiver Austin Trammell to the practice squad.
Trammell had been on the team’s 53-man roster, but was waived by the team on Monday.
In five games played for Jacksonville this season, Trammell has totaled three catches on 10 targets for 46 yards.
Dickerson has spent the last several weeks on the team’s practice squad and has been called up three times via standard elevation on gamedays. NFL rules say teams cannot recall a player from the practice squad more than three times in a season.
Dickerson is ineligible to be elevated again, hence why Jacksonville opted to sign him to the active roster.
Dickerson has played 32 snaps this season on defense and 13 on special teams.
