It looks like the Philadelphia Eagles will get some much-needed help in the secondary.

Eagles safety Marcus Epps should be ready to play and is in contention to start on Monday night against the Los Angeles Chargers, defensive coordinator Vic Fangio said Wednesday.

The Eagles announced that Epps, who has been on the injured reserve since Nov. 1, had his 21-day practice window opened. After missing four games, he is eligible to return on Monday.

“He’s an experienced safety,” Fangio said of Epps. “He’s got good instincts. He’s got a good feel for the game. We’ll have to get a feel and a barometer about where he’s at after missing the last four or five weeks, whatever it was, where he couldn’t practice.”

Epps, 29, could provide a veteran presence and bolster a position in flux. Two weeks ago, rookie starter Andrew Mukuba suffered a fractured ankle against the Dallas Cowboys. Mukuba’s injury will require surgery. He is on IR and could miss the remainder of the season.

In Mukuba’s place, veteran Sydney Brown started next to Reed Blankenship against the Chicago Bears on Black Friday. The erratic third-year defensive back struggled.

“It was a lot like the rest of us,” Fangio said of Brown’s performance. “Some good, some bad.”

Epps, who was signed to the practice squad in August, has played only 15 defensive snaps this season. But Epps seemingly passed Brown on the depth chart before suffering his injury, picking up a handful of snaps ahead of Brown.

Monday could be an opportunity for Epps to retake a role he once held for the Eagles. Epps first played for the Eagles from 2019-22, appearing in 54 games and making 25 starts. Epps was a full-time starter for the 2022 Super Bowl team before signing a two-year deal with the Raiders.

Epps started all 17 games for the Raiders during the 2023 season. He suffered an ACL tear in Week 3 of the 2024 campaign, missing the rest of the season.

Epps, who has 300 tackles in his eight-year NFL career, could be a stabilizing force next to Blankenship against the Chargers’ 12th-ranked ground game.

The Eagles face Los Angeles on Monday at SoFi Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 8:15 p.m.
