For the Arizona Cardinals, it’s another week with bad news on the injury front.

In their first practice of the week — on Wednesday, Dec. 3 — the Cardinals were without both running back Trey Benson and wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr.

Those absences headlined a list that also included wide receiver Greg Dortch, right tackle Kelvin Beachum, edge rusher Josh Sweat, cornerback Max Melton, safety Dadrion Taylor-Demerson and defensive tackle Walter Nolen. All eight players typically play a role on game days; five are starters

Benson’s absence comes after he missed the final two practices of Week 13 with a recurrence of his knee injury. He was placed on injured reserve after Week 4 and designated to return on Nov. 19, opening his three-week practice window. He must be activated by Dec. 10 or his season will be over.

Benson was last at practice on Nov. 26 when he appeared uncomfortable during individual drills.

If Benson does not play this week, Bam Knight and Michael Carter would likely lead the Cardinals’ backfield again, with Knight operating as the early-down back and Carter on passing downs. If Emari Demercado is able to return from his own ankle sprain, he would figure to take over from Carter as the passing down back. Demercado was present at practice Wednesday.

When asked whether Benson has a chance to play, Jonathan Gannon replied only, “We’ll see.”

Gannon has not provided any notable updates on Benson within the last month, repeatedly responding, “Take it day by day,” when asked about his status.

On his weekly appearance on Arizona Sports 98.7, Gannon offered more insight into Harrison’s status. Harrison returned in Week 13 from a two-game absence with appendicitis but dealt with a heel injury throughout the game. After trying to play through the injury, he exited early in the fourth quarter.

“Max Melton didn’t go this last week ’cause of a heel, kind of a similar injury,” Gannon said. “Those are tricky cause Marv — that’s what I kept saying, he kept going back in the game. And you watch him run, and he’s running great. But then when he walks or he jogs, it doesn’t look great. It’s a tough injury cause it’s on his foot. Any time he puts pressure on his foot, it’s tough. So we’ll just take it day by day with him.”

If Harrison is out, the Cardinals would again turn to Michael Wilson as their top receiver. He finished with 25 catches for 303 yards in Harrison’s two-game absence due to appendicitis.
