PSU appeared to be close to signing a deal with BYU head coach Kalani Sitake, but the Cougars were able to dig into their coffers to keep the head coach in Provo before a possible appearance in the College Football Playoff.
Sitake was just the latest miss for the Nittany Lions. But PSU athletic director Patrick Kraft has whiffed on several coaches since October.
Per Thomas Frank Carr of On3, the Nittany Lions’ coaching search has allowed for seven other college football coaches to earn a combined $370.8 million in contract extensions.

Indiana head coach Curt Cignetti and Nebraska head coach Matt Rhule were early ties for the PSU job in October. However, both coaches quickly earned contract extensions midway through the season.
Toward the end of the season, Texas A&M gave a contract extension to Mike Elko, Missouri gave Eli Drinkwitz a nice raise, and Clark Lea signed a new deal to stay with Vanderbilt. Earlier this week, Brent Key signed a contract extension with Georgia Tech.
The numbers used by Carr are an estimate based on the minimum On3 can report, meaning the actual figure is likely more than $370.8 million.
While coaches are cashing in at the expense of Penn State, Virginia Tech head coach James Franklin was busy raiding nearby recruits. VT was ranked No. 22 for the class of 2026 after the early signing period on Wednesday, per 247 Sports.
Without a head coach, Penn State currently has the 150th-best class for 2026. The Nittany Lions will need to add some fresh money to the $370 figure before more recruits sign with the program.
